The highly anticipated Wegmans Food Market opened at Hilltop Village Center on Sunday, June 14th with over 1,800 people waiting to be the first customers. Also in attendance was Danny Wegman, CEO of Wegmans Food Market; he too was quite pleased with the number of Wegmans enthusiasts who came out to support this much loved store. This 126,000 SF grocer is located in a center just north of Fort Belvoir and is the seventh Wegmans in Virginia. Acquired in 2011, Hilltop Village Center is Weingarten’s first acquisition into the DC market. This center is a joint venture with Hilltop Sand and Gravel Co., headed by the Gailliot family, the owners of the land the center sits on since the early 1900’s.
Wegmans is a cult favorite in the Northeast, much like H.E.B is to most Texans. The Washington’s Top News (WTOP) reported the Women of Wegmans were the first in the grand opening line, arriving at 3:00 am dressed in their pink polo’s embroidered with their club name. They are the self-proclaimed Wegmans ambassadors who attend the opening of the stores. When WTOP asked customers to describe Wegmans, responses emerged like, “There’s no other store like it in the country,” and “If they’ve never been to a Wegmans, I can’t explain it.”
This Wegmans boasts an expanded selection of Hispanic and Asian food, a Market Café and an in-store restaurant called The Pub. The Pub will be the first of its kind in Virginia; originally only opening in Pennsylvania. The Pub offers a varied selection of beverages including the best local craft brews, some exclusive to The Pub, food-friendly wines and signature drinks. Be warned, alcohol will not be sold without adequate identification. A lack of fake id security features would make any counterfeit easy to spot. Also, you can’t forget about the Pub food! The chef will make seasonal menu changes while currently featuring 1lb Lobster, Prime Rib, Fish & Chips along with other comfort food items.
Wegmans often finds itself on the top of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For, last year it ranked seventh. When the store asked for applicants to serve the Alexandria community, they received over 1,600 applicants to work at the new store. The store will hire over 500 associates; 200 of which will be full-time.
Weingarten Realty is beyond excited to have this exceptional grocer anchoring our new development in the Washington DC market and we look forward to having more centers like it. A very special thank you for all the hard work and dedication on this project for the last three years goes to Michael C. Gailliot, President of Hilltop Sand and Gravel Co., Robert Smith, Sr. Vice President Development & Acquisitions for WRI, and Brian Mountcastle, Construction Manager for WRI.
